Special effects makeup artist Kazuhiro Tsuji was responsible for transforming Carrey into the Grinch

Special effects makeup artist Kazuhiro Tsuji was responsible for transforming Carrey into the Grinch. It was reported that Carrey was a nightmare on set with the Grinch costume, which included a yak skin suit, green makeup, facial prosthetics and yellow contact lenses, making him particularly angry.

Some commentators have also suggested that the lost contact lenses could have been caused by discomfort.

Special effects makeup artist Kazuhiro Tsuji, responsible for transforming Carrey into the Grinch, previously described how Carrey’s huge contact lenses were particularly uncomfortable and snow on set would get stuck in them.

This, combined with wWearing a huge yak skin suit, facial prosthetics and layers of green paint took their toll on Carrey, and Tsuji described how unpleasant it was to work with the actor.

In a 2017 interview with Vulture, Tsuji said of Carrey, ‘When we were on set, he was really mean to everybody and early on in production they couldn’t get it done.

‘After two weeks, we were only able to finish the three-day shooting schedule, because all of a sudden he would just disappear, and when he came back, everything was destroyed. We couldn’t shoot anything.

Three-time Oscar nominee Tsuji eventually dropped out of the film due to stress, but returned on the condition that the production company would help with his green card and Carrey would behave himself better.

In an attempt to help Carrey deal with the ‘horrific’ experience of being in the Grinch costume, in which he spent 92 days, producer Brian Grazer enlisted a CIA agent who specializes in enduring torture to offer some pointers.

Carrey said he developed a habit of smoking two packs a day after his agent told him, ‘Eat everything you see. If you’re freaking out and you start to spiral down, turn on the television, change a pattern, ask someone you know to smack you in the head, punch you in the leg, or smoke as much as you can.’
