If you’ve ever wondered which woman actually inspired John Mayer’s Grammy-winning song “Your Body Is a Wonderland,” then you’re in luck.
In a conversation with Alex Cooper on the “Call Her Daddy” podcast, Mayer finally confessed to rumors that he wrote the song for a famous woman he was dating in 2001.
“That was about my first girlfriend,” Mayer clarified.
“That was about the feeling, which I think was kind of nostalgic already. I was 21 when I wrote that song and I was nostalgic about being 16.”

The song, released in 2001 from Mayer’s debut album “Room for Squares”, quickly gained attention for its ingratiating lyrics and the mysterious subject behind its creation.
Since the singer was dating actress Jennifer Love Hewitt at the time, tabloids assumed the song was about her.
“That’s one of those things where people just form this idea,” he said of the perception that the song was about a celebrity he dated. “That’s reinforced over the years… I had never met a celebrity when I wrote that song.”

Over the years, Mayer has gained a reputation for her illustrious dating history.
In addition to Hewitt, Mayer has dated Jennifer Aniston, Katy Perry, Jessica Simpson and famously Taylor Swift, along with many others.
Despite what people might think of her dating history, Mayer doesn’t necessarily think she deserves the labels she’s been given.
“I have some nameplates with me like ‘lothario’ and ‘womanizer’ and stuff. I think – look, this is it. This is the role I play in the big TV show I didn’t write. That’s okay,” he said before remarking, “Maybe I have a hand in that or something.”

Since rising to fame in 2001, John Mayer has been associated with a number of A-list actresses and musicians.

Part of the allure of Mayer’s music is guessing who his songs were written about.
“I don’t write songs about people. I don’t write them for people or about people. I can use a relationship that inspires me to write something. So yeah, even if I’m writing a song for someone else, it’s like that goes away and I’m left with the song,” Mayer said of what or who inspires him to write his music.
Though he did reveal the particular woman that “Your Body Is a Wonderland” was written about, don’t expect to crack the code of who he’s referring to in his other songs.
“I don’t like to tell anyone that a song is about anyone, because most of the time it’s not. And it takes people away from themselves because they’re just visualizing who I’m writing about.”

“The songs come out, they mean things to people – sometimes people think it’s about one person,” he explained. “Sometimes it hurts the song, sometimes the song doesn’t do so well because people say, ‘Well, he’s mean.’ and I say ‘It has nothing to do with that.’ But I’d rather keep the sanctity of those songs intact… Burn some of them because people think it’s about a person and it’s not… The most important thing in my life right now is my songs.”
